EAST END OF "THE VIRGIN" (a.k.a. Calle Mare De Déu) The east end of Calle de La Virgen used to be busy earlier. The only logical reason I have ever been offered was from Simona at TEATRO "Once you are at that end of the street, all you can do is come back, so what better place to start."
How things have changed...
Very few now still act like a 'gaggle of queens' and stick to a set routine. It can be difficult to spot a hot spot in any one area at any time.
For those of you who have not been before and don't want to look like a lost punter, a short set of instructions:
Walk or take a taxi to the harbour, the 'Mar y Sol' is known by every driver, and walk down to the end of the port, the water is on your left, towards the sea wall that extends out to the lighthouse (a good place for a romantic walk). Don't forget to enjoy the view on the way.
At the very end of the road, just before the mini roundabout, walk up a small flight of steps. Turn right, towards a small 'Hostel' (La Pena), and you are now at the 'east end' of Calle de La Virgen (also called Calle Mare de Deu). 'Tied Up' is directly in front of you, JJ's is the first bar on the right, jsut past the now closed TEATRO.
The 'east end' of the street can be busy at any time from 10 - 3am.
The central section of 'the street' has changed considerably over the past twelve years: Gerry Kelly's defunct 'Catwalk' bar reopened as Capricho; and having been packed every year, is now closed... A seafood restaurant with its distinctive aroma thankfully closed and opened as Cargo, which has closed and is now called TRAPEZZIO. The 'Samsara Show bar' with its own distinct aroma opened across the road; (then spent a year as CARGO'S terrace) it is now a lesbian bar called SUNRISE and feels like it has been there for years.. 'Foc í Fum' gave up on food to sell drinks only and has now finally stopped serving drinks; leaving Exits and Indera. All in all, this section of the street is busy, if not a bottleneck attracting the less adventurous, go on have a walk to the end!.
