CAFES, TAPAS BARS, BISTROS, etc...
If you are looking for a quick and easy lunch, you will find a mixture of 'everything with chips', Spanish Beach Front / Hotel Café, Tapas bars, local cafes and pasta bars. At this end of the market, you can be served anything from quality a meal that is excellent value (big enough for two), comfort food, or just plane old slop, so don't take anything at face value.
As the quality of food served can vary enormously, a good café/bistro can be hard to find, if you find a place you can. For the obvious reasons (the number of tourists), Beach Front / Hotel Café are usually found with a direct view of the sea in Figueretes, and offer 'especials' like; egg & chips, ½ roast chicken, beans on toast, etc... NOTE: These places serve what is affectionately referred to as tourist crap. They exist, on the whole, for those who would not be seen dead in anything as tacky as an ex-pat café, but don't want to eat any 'foreign muck' either.
The food can be indescribable, worth much less the bargain price you paid for it, and produced at a level usually for that repository of quality and style, Gran Canaria. This variation on the 'Greasy Spoon' is not recommended for those with a compromised immune system or expectant mothers, or even old ladies.
Tapas, local cafés and pasta bars etc. Some of the 'local' cafes around and in Ibiza town are not outwardly welcoming to the once-a-year holiday maker, and you may be hard-pushed to find any particular one, as they can be well hidden, while being right in the middle of everything. The average 'local' has a 'worn' edge to it, and a good smattering of residents, at all times of day and night.
At the lower end of the scale, the average café will have a 14" TV blasting out a football match or Spanish soap opera at full volume. If you can put up with the noise and/or waiting for a table (which can be a good sign in itself), the food can be excellent and good value for money.
At the other end of the scale, the tables will be packed into an area designed for half the number, there will always be a queue at the door, the staff will look terminally bewildered, and you may have to wait, for a very long time. You will get a bloody good meal, and you have probably have found the 'in' café for the island's staff and bar owners. But you could decide it's all too much trouble, and go for a Kentucky.
The bistro end of the market is best represented by El Bistro Menu, La Manduca, Tomate, the gay beach bar, Chiringay, Pinocho's, and Bliss. All manage to serve excellent food, in completely different surroundings, at a reasonable price. El Bistro Menu offers three courses for €10 - we have just been and it really is better value for money than falling in love with yourself (well it saves hours of work in the gym...)
