SNACKS (coffee and cake shops)

Most coffee and cake shops will do some form of snack - it ain't difficult, but boy does the quality vary. What can be a reasonable burger-in-a-bun in one place, can be inedible paté of salt, pepper and offal in another.

Most people seem to stick it out when served inedible pap - in fact, they become bloody good at pretending they like it, or that they're no longer hungry -some will go back to prove the point!

If your looking for a snack, stick to the better cake shops (sorry, can't type patisserie consistently) - which are usually excellent, that is, if they stick to coffee and cakes.

If the menu suggests that they will attempt anything more than cheese and ham toasted sandwiches, hitch up your sarong and run for it.

This is of course not always true:

The Croissant Show make some brilliant savouries (they also supply to a number of snack bars), and Café Central a great ham, eggs and potato fry up.
