SCHEDULED FLIGHTS
The benefits of scheduled flights, apart from a sensible amount of legroom, tends to be choice, flexibility, punctuality and being treated like cattle with a modicum of intelligence. (And airmiles, but you must stick to one alliance). Then again, if you jut want to get there, who cares.
'No frills' airlines generally advertise low fairs. BUT BOOK EARLY, as I have often found that a last minute round trip on a budget airline is HIGHER than full service carriers - and all you receive in nothing at all for the high price you have paid. Generally do not expect pampering, in-flight entertainment or decent coffee.
Only the Spanish airlines offer direct scheduled flights to Ibiza (from other Spanish cities), with currently one or two exceptions (Germany and the UK).
Ibiza is now well served by 'low cost' carriers, if you want it crude and easy, use Easy-jet - but book early!
'Easy-jet' operate daily flights from London and occasional (weekly) flights from other regional airports across the UK, as well as some direct European destinations.
They have been joined by Air Excel, British Midland, British Airways, British European... So check the 'links' pages and the individual airlines web sites.
Silly season on 'new rules and regulations:
Now you are severely restricted on the hand luggage that you can take through security screening at airports, the 'quick buck' airlines (BA included) have taken full advantage, by reducing the luggage allowance. Insisting that you pre book luggage, and by charging extra, as well as excess baggage! Check the airlines luggage conditions before you buy a ticket - you could be very, very, very sorry!
Also easy jet has introduced 'pay extra for early boarding'. Be aware that when the whole flight pays the extra, no one benefits apart from 'easy-jet', who make couple of thousand euros for bugger all.
Almost finally - if you cancel a non refundable ticket you are entitled to the Tax back - so ask for it - it may well represent a good proportion of your ticket cost. And finally for this rant, Airport taxes for the same airport and route vary wildly by operator and route when you are going through exactly the same security... Shop around if you really are serious about a budget ticket.
Germany has faired very well with daily scheduled flights from a number of cities. Between LTU and Air Berlin, you can fly most days to Ibiza. Again check out the airlines own web-site for details. (Air Berlin also offer return tickets from London and other European destinations, to Ibiza.)
Big hint if travelling from UK, and looking for a low cost flight : BOOK AIR BERLIN from STANSTEAD via MALLORCA - THEY ARE GREAT! You get a reserved seat, food, a drink, and can upgrade to a 'real' meal if you WANT to pay extra, they put IBERIA to shame! Excellent staff and service. 'sleezyjet' take note.
Booking scheduled flights follows exactly the opposite rule of charters. The earlier you book, the lower the fare and better the flight times.
Do not however, be put off changing flights on route. Your bags go the whole way through, you only have to get yourself from one plane to another, via a bar and a little shopping. Stop-overs tend to be between 40-60 minutes, but in Madrid you will need a MINIMUM of an hour, not for you but for your bags to make it from one flight to another.
The journey is quite pleasant, there tends to be less naff punters (mainly business travellers on Iberia), lots of leg room compared to charter flights and on BA a sandwich, on Iberia you now have to pay for everything.
The more you pay for your ticket, the more flexible it will be. In 2007, Iberia's lowest ticket price was around 28 Euro plus taxes From London
For scheduled flights from the UK check out the links page.
STUDENT FARES:
Most scheduled airlines provide discounted fares to students and or the under-25s. Get an ISIC card and save. In europe, STA Travel, Campus Travel, and others; will sell the discounted fares and most tickets can be changed free-of-charge, (or for a small fee) and are usually valid for a year.
If you are under 25, you will be entitled to 'youth' fares if booking flights on Iberia, originating in Spain. Excellent discounts are available. Great for staying an extra few days, and returning in some style.
You can also mix charter and scheduled flights, and scheduled companies. In the winter, a favorite trip from the UK is to take a cheap charter, or EasyJet, to Palma, and Iberia over to Ibiza. This trip has been done for as little as €160 return.
See the 'getting there' links page for further airline information.
